UN-backed Libyan gov’t accuses east-based army of deadly shelling in capital

TRIPOLI (Xinhua) -- The UN-backed Libyan government forces accused the rival east-based army of killing four civilians on Tuesday in indiscriminate shelling in eastern Tripoli.
“Four were killed and six others injured as a result of shelling by the force of Haftar on civilian locations in Tajura (in eastern Tripoli) at noon,” the UN-backed government forces said on their official Facebook page.
The UN-backed government forces also posted images showing destroyed houses and vehicles in the area after the allegedly deadly shelling.
The east-based army has not commented on the shelling yet.
The east-based army, led by Khalifa Haftar, has been leading a military campaign since early April in and around the capital Tripoli, attempting to take over the city and topple the UN-backed government.
Thousands have been killed and injured in the fighting, and more than 120,000 civilians were displaced by the violence.
Despite international condemnation and calls for immediate cease-fire, civilians including children have continued to be targeted in and around Tripoli since the beginning of the conflict.
