Athletes, sports venues to undergo trial runs

Various federations presented reports on Saturday to the SEA Games Chairman, describing the progress of plans to test athletes at new sports complexes in Vientiane .

Many of the federations plan to test their athletes to assess their performance as well as to try out each new sports complex, including those for golf, volleyball and wushu, before the games begin in December.

At a SEA Games Committee meeting held on Saturday, Chairman Somsavat Lengsavad told federation representatives that not only should athletes be tested, but all the committees involved should run checks on activities related to each competition.

“Committees in charge of transport, the Athletes' Village, referees and other aspects of the games should evaluate their work during trials of each federation's athletes to see what areas are successful. If there are any mistakes, each committee should discuss them and solve the problem before the games begin in December,” he said.

Federations also reported on difficulties they were having and Mr Somsavat advised them how to solve the problems.

He advised federations to report problems to the committee quickly, saying there was not much time left so any difficulties had to be dealt with promptly.

“Don't hesitate to report a problem to the committee because we will help each other to solve it. Don't worry - every problem has a solution - but if it is not reported things will be too late,” Mr Somsavat said.

The chairman pointed out that federations still had many jobs to do so they must continue to tackle their duties as well as shoulder more responsibility.

“Federations must take more responsibility in their obligation to the country for SEA Games preparations and gather all staff and officials to work in unity.”

Mr Somsavat said it was important that other countries felt Laos had done a good job in organising the SEA Games, just like other nations in the region, as had occurred when Laos hosted the 10th Asean Summit in 2004.

“At that time we were congratulated on our efforts by other countries in the region and we want this occasion to meet with similar approval.”

The chairman advised all federations to be more closely involved in their work and see what still needed to be done to prepare for the games and increase cooperation with the various committees to make sure everything got done.
