Athletes' Village requires fine tuning
Head of the SEA Games Athletes' Village, Associate Professor Lammai Phiphakhavong, informed the latest meeting of the SEA Games Committee on Monday that 148 fire extinguishers had been installed in the village.
After an inspection of the village recently, Mr Lammai and fire fighting officials agreed that fire extinguishers must be installed in each building for fire safety.
Mr Lammai also informed the meeting of further improvements needed to the village before the SEA Games begin in December. These include mosquito nets, fly-screens on windows, medical rooms, installation of cable TV and a training course for village administration staff.
“Mosquito nets and window screens are very important because they can protect athletes from mosquito-borne diseases,” Mr Lammai said.
He stressed the need to address the problems promptly to ensure they are resolved before the games begin.
SEA Games Organising Committee Chairman, Mr Somsavat Lengsavad, said the installation of fire extinguishers is the responsibility of fire fighting officials from the Ministry of Public Security, not the construction sector. It is a positive that the facility is being inspected and any problems resolved before thousands of athletes a rrive for the games, he said.
“The relevant sectors should meet with the village committee to address any problems and organise training for administrative staff working at the village,” Mr Somsavat said.
Mr Lammai said all issues are being accounted for and will be included in the final budget report. Progress on resolving the problems will be reported at the next committee meeting.
