Chinese doctors help upgrade emergency procedures for SEA Games
It is not only the athletes that are undertaking intensive training for the SEA Games later this year.
Doctors and nurses are also preparing to handle many types of medical emergencies that are possible when large numbers of local and foreign athletes and visitors arrive.
The Serve 2U organisation of Hong Kong , China will be sharing knowledge and experience gained at the Olympic Games in Beijing last year with medical teams from Mahosot, Setthathirath, 109, 103 and Mittaphab hospitals.
In particular they will be working with doctors and nurses in intensive care units (ICUs) in these hospitals.
The Chinese organisation was involved with training doctors and nurses in ICU units supporting the Olympic Games in Beijing .
Last week, the organisation conducted a one-week training session for 30 doctors and nurses from Mittaphab Hospital .
Of particular importance is the process of assessing patients for urgent treatment and managing large numbers of patients at the same time.
Mittaphab Hospital Deputy Director, Dr Phath Keungsaneth said that normally, up to 80 people come for treatment in the ICU division of the hospital at any one time.
“Therefore, it is not difficult for us to handle this sort of situation,” he said.
However, the Serve 2U training covered management 200 or more patients.
This included simulation of an emergency involving the spread of contagious diseases.
“It is a good time for Lao nurses and doctors to share their experience with their Chinese counterparts who have experience at big sports event such as the Olympics,” Dr Phath said.
He said that 30 doctors and nurses from Mittaphab who had completed training would continue in turn to train their colleagues at the hospital.
Mittaphab has 10 teams and two ambulances to work as an emergency unit to help people during the games.
These teams will stay in the hospital instead of going to the game venues.
During August, Vice Presidents of Serve 2U, Dr Kenneth Y.K. Chung and Mr Yung King Wa, led a Chinese team in providing free surgery for face and jaw injuries at Mittaphab Hospital and provided free medical check-ups for Chommany Tai secondary school students, worth more than 30 million kip.
During this time, staff from the organisation also led the teams from Mittaphab and students at Chommany Tai in additional English speaking and writing skill instruction.
The Hong Kong-based Serve 2U began working in Laos in 2004.
So far, the team has already helped upgrade health condition in provinces of Borikhamxay, Saravan, Xekong, Attapeu, Xayaboury, Vientiane , Bokeo and Xayaboury, Luang Prabang and in the capital.
The 25th SEA Games will take place from December 9-18 in Vientiane .
