Lao, Thai officials tour SEA Games complex
Vientiane Vice Mayor Bounchan Sinthavong and Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra yesterday visited one of the sports complexes in Vientiane to be used for the 25th SEA Games.
During a visit to the Beungkhayong sports complex in Sisattanak district, they were briefed by the project manager, Mr Boonkuer Boonium.
Construction of the facility began in February after the governments of Laos and Thailand held a groundbreaking ceremony.
Mr Boonkuer said the complex is now 97 percent complete and a handover ceremony is scheduled for the end of November.
The project is funded by grant assistance of more than 76 million baht from the government of Thailand . This grant was to support preparations for the SEA Games as well as to promote sport locally.
The complex contains two buildings. One is a new facility built to host the boxing events at the games and the other is an old gymnasium that has been restored for shuttlecock matches.
“We've informed the Lao Shuttlecock Federation the facility is available for their athletes to use for training,” Mr Boonkuer said.
The new building can seat 1,500 people, while the restored facility can hold 500 people.
Most of the remaining work involves cleaning, some small construction jobs and electrical installation.
“There will be another project at the Vientiane Sports Office to clear rubbish and weeds from a nearby pond and we will then create a small park where people can come for jogging and other forms of exercise,” Mr Boonkuer said.
During his time here Mr Sukhumbhand also visited the Houaysone-Houyasoua Agricultural Development and Service Project in Nayang village of Naxaithong district, Vientiane , and attended the opening ceremony of the That Luang Festival.
