Construction teams have been working around the clock to make sure the roads are finished in time. |
Local press inspected the roads last week after many speculated they wouldn't be finished by the games deadline.
The construction committee's Mr Keuangkham Inthavong said yesterday roads were being checked weekly to identify any potential problems and to ensure progress was being made.
He said many motorists have expressed concern that the roads would not be ready in time.
“The roads will be available for use by the time the games start, but they will not be 100 percent finished, meaning they will only be a temporary route to avoid traffic jams during major events,” Mr Keuangkham explained.
The roads would be smooth, but would not be paved with asphalt.
When finished, the two roads will offer a direct route between central Vientiane and the National Stadium.
Vientiane Traffic Police and Fire Fighting Division's Deputy Chief Lieutenant Colonel Yuttaphong Souvannasin said both routes were intended for use only during the opening and closing ceremonies.
“Lane Xang and Kaysone Phomvihane avenues, as well as Road No. 13 south, will be the main roads used by officials, athletes and delegations on both days, so the two new routes will be for local motorists to avoid traffic jams during the opening and closing ceremonies,” Lieutenant Colonel Yuttaphong reported.
He said the construction committee would announce which roads were available for public access during these events.
The SEA Games Organising Committee has been following the road construction project closely to ensure everyone is working hard to prepare for the games.
