Thai coach serves up training for Lao tennis players

An experienced tennis coach from Thailand will join his Chinese counterpart this week to help train Lao tennis players ahead of the 25th SEA Games in December.

The deal came after the players spent time training under his tuition in Bangkok , Thailand , for more than one month.

The coach promised the Lao Tennis Federation he would come to Laos to join forces with a Chinese coach to train the players and improve their technique.

Federation Secretary Sisomphet Xayarath said that after practising in Thailand , the players had improved a lot.

However, there remains room for improvement, which requires more practice, something the Thai coach will be able to help with.

The federation has been training seven men and four women since April in Vientiane .

In September they went for training in Thailand to get more skills with an experienced coach there.

“The Chinese coach also went with her players to train in Thailand , so both Chinese and Thai coaches shared their efforts to train our athletes,” he said.

The coaches told the federation the Lao players had improved very quickly, but still needed more practice.

After returning, the team resumed practise at the courts at the National Stadium, where the SEA Games tennis matches will be played.

“We will make the final selection of players early next month. We will select four women and four men for the SEA Games.”

“The remaining three men will be substitutes if the players have any accidents during the competition,” Mr Sisomphone said.

The federation also organised a four day training course starting on Tuesday for more than 50 ball-boys and ball-girls as well as referees. The training is taking place at the same venue, and led by Thai trainers.

Opening the training course was SEA Games Technical and Preparation of Sport Contingent Committee Vice Chairman, Mr Phouvan Vongsouthi.

He urged participants to pay attention to trainers to boost their skills and ensure Laos would be a good host of the games.

Mr Sisomphet said participants would get the best view of the tennis matches during the games.

Some of them already have experience as referees, line judges or ball-boys, but some of them just loved to play tennis or were volunteers who wanted to be involved.
