Buddha statue casting ceremony

A metal Buddha statue about 2 metres high is being made. Take part in meditation and donate food, water and other items for charity.
When: Meditation starts on November 23 at 6pm. Casting ceremony will take place on November 24 at 10:30am.

Japanese speech contest

All students are invited to compete in the Japanese speech contest, which has three categories: a one-minute speech, a 3-minute speech on a topic of your choice, and reading a story, as well as poster design. The winners will get a prize and a certificate, and the winner of the 3-minute speech will be given a return air ticket to Japan.
When: Applications accepted until January 27, 2019. The poster design contest is open until December 30, 2018.

Smart brain contest

The Smart Brain Centre in Vientiane invites children across the country to enter the first smart brain contest, with a focus on mathematics. All competitors will receive a certificate and a medal while the winner will receive a certificate, a gold medal and a trophy.

Smartphone film competition

The French Institute is organising a competition of films made on smartphones titled: ‘1 idea, 1 film, 1 minute’. The patron of the competition and president of the jury is Mattie Do, a well-known Lao filmmaker.

Lao Greentech contest

The Ministry of Energy and Mines, Ministry of Education and Sports, and the Hitachi Zosen Company invite everyone to enter the Lao Greentech contest. 14 teams will compete with their skills and ideas on making new products in the field of renewable energy and green technology. The winner will receive an award from the Minister of Energy and Mines.

Cultural Studies Series talk

The Cultural Studies Series presents guest speaker Vieng Sourignosack with a talk titled ‘The Construction Transition in Laos’. Bar service available. Entry fee 30,000K (standard), 10,000K (students).

Lao-Chinese film screenings

The Department of Cinema, Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, is partnering with the Outstanding Lao-Chinese Film Festival to screen Lao and Chinese films dubbed in Lao. Local residents are invited to attend free of charge. For more information call 021 212478; 020 5611 0717.

Mekong business challenge

This competition is open to all undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled at universities in Laos and other countries who have business and social venture ideas related to all sectors. The winning team will advance to the International Business Model Competition to be held in the United State in May 2019.

Winter market

It´s that time of the year again for the Winter Market. Those want to have a stall at the event are invited to book. Volunteers are also needed for helping with organisation before and during the market, as well as for planning and helping with children´s activities during the market.

Vientiane Classic Run

This is the third annual run, taking place through the capital city. The run has two distance categories: 12 km and 5 km. the actitity aimes to promote the message “Inclusion and Equality for All” which supported by Humanity and Inclusion who work with Lao Handicap.

Charity concert

WIG Laos along with students and teachers from 11 schools in Vientiane are creating a new community fundraising concert called Help for Attapeu. The people of Attapeu need help rebuilding their lives and communities. Tickets cost 80,000 kip and will be on sale soon, with all proceeds going to rebuilding projects in Attapeu and WIG Laos projects. The event will also feature stalls selling hand-made goods, food and beverages.

2nd StorySlam

It´s time for the battle of all battles again. Those who want to be a slammer and share your story are invited to join this event with the theme “Lost and Found”. Your story must be true. Interested candidates should write 1-2 sentences about your story idea and yourself.

When: Apply before November 17. The event is on November 17 at 7pm.

YSEALI development grants

Apply for the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative’s Seeds for the Future Grants Competition which could help to turn ideas into action. Seeds for the Future is a small grants competition for young leaders in Southeast Asia. It provides funding for the region’s most promising young leaders to carry out projects that improve their communities, countries and the region in the fields of Civic Engagement, Education, Economic Growth, and Sustainable Development.

The National Blood Transfusion Centre in Vientiane invites everyone to donate blood to assist floodvictims in Attapeu province. Visit Tadxon waterfall for the Ancestor Festival

Tadxon waterfall is welcoming those who want some fun after giving alms at temples to celebrate the Ancestor Festival on September 24.
Visitors will be served free grilled chicken at picnic huts, made from chickens raised at the site. Activities include forest walks and a tour of the Chao Souphanouvong Cave, where President Souphanouvong and other Lao leaders took refuge after escaping from Phonkheng jail in 1959 during the Indochina war. The site has 111 huts, 40 guesthouse rooms, and 11 elephants providing rides. There is also a 3,700 metre cable car ride that takes visitors to a rocky hilltop.
Where: Near Nanyang village, Naxaithong district, 4km off Road 13 North from Huakhua village, 28km from downtown Vientiane.

Vientiane city pillar ceremony

The public is invited to this special ceremony, which will feature candlelight and wax castle processions, and almsgiving.
When: November 17-21. The main ceremony will take place on November 20 from 4pm with a candlelight procession followed by early morning almsgiving on November 21 and a wax castle procession leading to the That Luang stupa at 12:30pm.  
Where: City pillar on Setthathirath Road, Simeuang village, Sisattanak district.

Miss Dok Ngiew contest

Bokeo province invites young ladies to enter this contest as part of the Dok Ngiew Ban (Cotton Tree Blossom) festival. Candidates must be aged 16-25, at least 160 cm tall, and not have applied previously. The winner will receive 15 million kip in cash and a silver crown weighing 0.5 kg.

That Luang festival fair

The annual trade fair will yet again be a highlight of the That Luang festival, with a wide variety of goods on sale. There will also be free concerts by popular singers from Laos and Thailand as well as circus acts, lucky draws and other fun activities.

Vientiane zero plastic week

Students of the New Zealand Asean Scholarship (NZAS) in 2018, who are launching a campaign to reduce the use of plastic bags with the theme “Vientiane Zero Plastic Week 19-25 November 2018”, invite everyone to participate by posting a picture or video every time you refuse to accept a plastic bag or other type of plastic container that will become trash after using it. You stand to win a beautiful free reusable shopping bag or a luxury mug from NZAS Students and GGGI teams at the That Luang Festival.

Opportunity for Lao youngsters

Those aged 19 years to 35 years are invited to apply for the eMpowering Youth Across Asean Programme.
