CERN summer programme

The CERN international summer programme, a fully-funded summer programme in Switzerland, is designed for Bachelor and Master’s students from the fields of physics, engineering, computer science and mathematics. Lasting 8-13 weeks, the programme offers candidates the chance to start a research career with others who love science.

Scholarships for study in Indonesia

The government of the Republic of Indonesia is offering the Darmasiswa scholarship for Lao citizens. We welcome interested students to apply to study Indonesian language and culture. All applicants must complete the online application process through the website.

Indonesian arts and culture scholarships

The government of the Republic of Indonesia is offering the Indonesian Arts and Culture Scholarship for Lao citizens. Candidates should send application forms to the Indonesian Embassy in Vientiane.

Japanese Film Festival

Here’s a chance to see Japanese films during this festival which aims to bring more Japanese cinema to Laos. The films are in Japanese with Lao and English subtitles, except for “Gochan” which is in Thai with Lao and English subtitles.

Japanese speech contest

All students are invited to compete in the Japanese speech contest, which has three categories: a one-minute speech, a 3-minute speech on a topic of your choice, and reading a story, as well as poster design. The winners will get a prize and a certificate, and the winner of the 3-minute speech will be given a return air ticket to Japan.
When: Applications accepted until January 26. The poster design contest is open until December 22.

Appeal for blood donations for dengue patients

The National Blood Transfusion Centre invites members of the public to give blood as this is urgently needed by hospitals for people suffering from dengue fever.

Appeal for help for flood victims

You are invited to give generously to help thousands of families in Savvannaket, Saravan, Champassak, Attapeu and Xekong provinces who have suffered in the wake of widespread flooding. They need urgent help to meet their basic needs, including essentials such as food, drinking water and clothing.
Where: The emergency appeal is organised by various organisations in Vientiane and the provinces.

Small grants programme

The Australian Embassy invites applications for this programme, which supports small value, low risk and high impact activities that contribute to sustainable economic growth and poverty reduction. Projects must have defined and realistic objectives and a clear outcome. Grants will be awarded to maximum of AUD50,000.

Buddha statue casting ceremony

Buddhists are invited to a ceremony to cast the 2.5m bronze Phachao Ong Teu image. Donations are requested for the renovation of the ordination hall at the temple along with donations of food, water and other items for charity.

Japan Festival

The Japanese Embassy in Laos will host the Japan Festival 2020 in Vientiane. Events will comprise the sale of Japanese products, a martial arts demonstration, and Japanese films.

Phabath Phonsan Festival

The public is invited to attend Phabath Phonsan Festival, the oldest stupa in Borikhamxay province. During the annual festival, you can shop handmade products made by local artisans at a trade fair. There will be an entertainment show by local music band.

Miss Dok Ngiew contest

Bokeo province invites young ladies to enter this contest as part of the Ban Dok Ngiew (kapok flower) festival. Candidates must be aged 16-25, at least 160 cm tall, and not have applied previously. The winner will receive 18 million kip in cash and a silver crown weighing 1 kg.

Cultural Studies Series talk

The Cultural Studies Series (CSS) presents a talk titled 'Criticism and Confidence: The Lost People of the Amazon' by Colin Cotterill, author of the popular Dr Siri series of mystery novels set in Laos. Entry fee 30,000K (standard), 10,000K (Lao students). Entry fees are donated to charity.

Scholarships in India

The government of India is offering scholarships for Lao students with good knowledge of English for undergraduate and postgraduate courses and doctoral studies in Indian universities.
When: Last date for receipt of printed online application form along with requisite documents is January 31. For Ph.D. courses the last date is July 31.

Free cleft palate surgery

Mahosot Hospital and Xieng Khuang Hospital are offering free surgery to children aged one year or older (or weighing at least 5kg) with a harelip and/or cleft palate. This service is supported by the Bridge the Gap Foundation in the Netherlands. Financial support for travel expenses for provincial patients and guardians available.

Rugby 10s tournament

The Lao Rugby Federation is holding the DHL Vientiane International 10s Rugby Championship, involving over 30 teams from around the world including the United States, China, Thailand, Vietnam and Laos.
Competition is open to Men’s Elite, Men’s Development (U18), Women’s Elite, and Women’s Development (U18) divisions.

Baseball course

Young people aged 14 to 15 years from poor families living in Phongsaly, Borkeo, Huaphan, Xiengkhuang, Saravan, Xekong and Attapeu with an interest in playing baseball can join this course to learn all about the game. Applicants have to send their story about “Why you like to play baseball?” on an A4 sheet along with their photo and phone number. Selected applicants will receive a scholarship, food and accommodation, and an opportunity to participate in  domestic and international baseball tournaments.

Photojournalism grants

Photojournalists and students interested in working on photo assignments may apply to Yannis Behrakis Photojournalism Grants programme. Up to 10 winners will receive US$8,000 each to learn new skills and tell stories in a new way. Pictures taken by winners will be distributed on Reuters news media platforms.
