Fulbright scholarship awardee recounts her success

Ms Soulivanh Rattanavong, 24, of Nakham village, Sikhottabong district, Vientiane, received a Fulbright Scholarship this year after she was selected by examination for one of four scholarships from the US Congress to study in the United States. She shares her story with Vientiane Times :

Q:What is the scholarship?

A: The Fulbright Scholarship was established by the US Congress in 1946 to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries through the exchange of persons, knowledge, and skills.

This is a great opportunity for enthusiastic and academic individuals to further their higher education and to exchange cultures and experiences at an international level.

Ms Soulivanh Rattanavong.

This year there are four Fulbright Scholarship recipients from Laos who are going to the United States: Mr Alat Sinthavy will do a Master's in Economics, Ms Siriphone Thongbonh will study for a Master's in Travel and Tourism, Ms Souphata Thepnarong will take a Master's in Gender Studies and I will study for a Master's in Business Administration with a focus on Finance.

Q: How did you find out about this scholarship?

A: I heard of this scholarship while I was completing my Bachelor degree in Business Administration at the Lao-American College. At that time, a lot of people were very interested in applying. With strong support from teachers, family and friends, I gained great advice from them.

Q: How do you feel after being selected?

A: The Fulbright is a highly prestigious scholarship and is the most meaningful accomplishment in my life. Not only is it an honour to myself but also to my family, who have always been a strong support to me in pursuing higher education.

My greatest ambition is to gain knowledge in Business Administration, with a focus on Finance studies, in the United States because of the highly praised educational universities and their innovative teaching techniques, and particularly in the global business field, which can facilitate great learning and understanding of international business, finance and offer a broader perspective of the business world.

Q: What would you say to other students who want to succeed like you?

A: My experience in the US will be the most meaningful yet the most challenging one I have ever had so far. I truly believe if I can get this far, others definitely can as well.

Q: How do your parents support you?

My parents have been a strong support for me from the very beginning. They are doing their best and I am very thankful.

Q: What do you plan to do after you graduate?

A: After my graduation, I hope to work in the finance sector and related fields. This will allow me to apply the knowledge and skills I learn as well as continuing to learn from real banking experience.

A: When is the test date? How many per year?

Q: Applications for the Fulbright Scholarship open around April and four scholarships are offered annually.

Each applicant must submit an application online and email in PDF format a set of application to the US Embassy in Vientiane. The next step is to wait for an email notifying of the English screening test date and details. (Applicants who already have a minimum TOEFL IBT score of 88 or 7.0 IELTS may not need to take the screening test.)Those who pass the screening test will then be called for an interview before taking the GRE/GMAT exam.
