Young Lao fashionista makes waves on catwalk

A boy from the southern province of Champassak has achieved his dream of being a fashion designer and creating his own brand, helping to bring the Lao fashion industry to international attention.

Mr Si AmphanChanthavichit, 19, decided to enter the Lao Young Designer Project fashion contest in 2015 to prove his skills and talent as a designer and make his way in the world after finishing secondary school in his home town.

Much to his surprise he won the contest. His reward was a six month intensive course in fashion design at the ESMOD Fashion Design School in Paris. He was the first Lao national to be enrolled at this prestigious fashion school.

His very first collection was unveiled to the public and foreign designers at Lao Fashion Week in 2015, when he made good use of what he had learnt in Paris. His collection created great surprise among those attending the event and he was able to reap the first fruits of success in the fashion world.

He continued to develop his work and has taken part in Lao Fashion Week each year, learning more from both local and international experts in the field.

This year, he entered the fashion design contest titled AirAsia Runway Designers Search 2017, organised by AirAsia to find young Asian designers to represent their countries.

He was one of two designers selected as Lao country representatives from among the more than 50 who participated.

His fashion collection and that of his friend then appeared on the catwalk at the Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week 2017 that was held in the Malaysian capital recently.

His designs have received plenty of interest and good feedback from foreign judges and those who attended the Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week.

He gained a lot of experience and knowledge about fashion from catwalk outings and other designers' projects and is developing his own brand to reflect his personal talents in the world of fashion and bring Laos to the attention of others working in this very competitive and high profile field.

Mr Si AmphanChanthavichit's brand “Billy” will officially be revealed to the public today, the final day of Lao Fashion Week 2017 at the Crowne Plaza hotel, where he will show a collection of 20 outfits.

Some of the outfits were on display at the night fashion party held on September 7 to raise funds for the Lao Young Designers Development Project and at the night reception party held on Monday at the French Embassy Residence in Vientiane to officially open Lao Fashion Week 2017.

He selected Ling Ling, who was runner up in the Miss International Queen contest, to wear his outfits at the night fashion event because the concept and her character were well matched.

The “Billy” collection is directed at smart girls and has a “sexy punk” style that is in tune with their modern outlook.

People interested in the brand can contact Si direct on 76243738 or by visiting the fan page IG Billy Official to see the collection.

A video introducing the Billy brand and its range of outfits will also be uploaded to social media today. He urges everyone to share this collection.

He said he gained good experience and made useful connections among both local and foreign designers during the fashion project, which has made him confident about building his own brand by trying out his ideas.

“Every minute of fashion design gave me new ideas for my own brand, but a year or so ago I wasn't ready because I was short on experience and knowledge. Now I'm ready to create my own brand ‘Billy',” he said.

One of his dreams is to export his brand after popularising it in Laos.

He is now in his second year at the Faculty of Engineering at the National University of Laos.

He urges young people who dream of pursuing a career in fashion not to give into the inevitable struggles they will face and to dare to show their ideas, saying that time won't wait for anyone.

Those who want to see the full collection of the “Billy” brand should not miss the final day of Lao Fashion Week 2017.
