Youthful movie director shares his path to success

Young movie director Chantheva Dithhavong, 21, better known as Zumo, has had an incredible rise to fame in the entertainment world following the success of his series Bad Friend through social media outlets, which has generated rave reviews from legions of young people.

Chantheva began working in the Lao entertainment industry as a singer with Kaona Entertainment in 2015 before becoming a movie director in 2016.

“I turned to film directing because I wanted to try my hand at something new and have some fresh experiences. I found that while many people were interested in becoming a director, they did not eventually pursue this path,” he said.

Mr Chantheva Dithhavong, or Zumo.

He decided to follow through with his idea and began developing his skills on the way to becoming the best movie director in Laos.

Chantheva learnt his craft under the instruction of veterans in Lao entertainment circles. He then produced his first series “Until You” or “ Chon Kua Dai Hak Kan ”.

The series was released in July and August last year on Facebook, YouTube and movie websites, receiving a good response on social media, especially from the younger generation.

Fans of the series called on him to give them more of the same thing. He responded by coming up with a second series titled Bad Friend .

Bad Friend has turned into a bigger project for Chantheva than his first series because he was determined to create something that came from his heart and based the events portrayed on his experiences in real life.

Around 160 people attended the casting call from which 22 were selected. The series has a main cast of 10 people with 12 secondary actors.

Chantheva held a Buangsuang ceremony in March to launch the shooting of Bad Friend at his house in Saphanthong village, Sisattanak district, Vientiane.

The series is aired on Facebook, YouTube and movie websites every Friday. The storyline follows the lives of a group of young people in school and revolves around the good and bad situations they find themselves in.

The lead actors are Mr Boy Kissana, Ms Em Larn, Mou Souksomvang and Ms Anny Chandalasanh. The series has eight episodes and the first three have already been released.

Bad Friend received a lot of interest from youngsters after the first episode was released on the official Facebook page on September 9, garnering more than 600,000 likes and more than 500,000 shares.

The second episode proved equally popular, getting more than 670,000 likes and more than 500,000 shares.

Zumo hopes fans will follow the series and his other work to spur on everyone involved in the series.
