3. Development, GDP per capita gap remains huge, minister says
The gap in overall development and incomes between cities and rural communities is substantial, Minister of Planning and Investment Dr Souphanh Keomixay has said. This is reflected in the significant difference between Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and GDP per capita among the various provinces, he told a two-day meeting between government cabinet members, the Vientiane Mayor and provincial governors, which ended on Friday. . . . . . 4. Government on track to reduce poverty
The government is working towards raising 4,833 families out of poverty by the end of 2018, lowering the total number of poor families to 66,139, or 5.67 percent of all households nationwide. Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Dr Kikeo Chanthabouly reminded members of the National Assembly (NA) recently that this was the target set in the draft socio-economic development plan for 2018. Meanwhile, the government is on track to raise 5,580 families out of poverty by the end of 2017, reducing the number to 69,772, or 5.98 percent of the total, a report presented at the meeting stated. . . .
