Gold association to train workers for jewellery, gem industry

The Gold Jewellery and Gem Association of Laos, the National Institute of Fine Arts and the Lao-German Technical College on November 30 signed a tripartite agreement on human resource development in the field of gold jewellery and gems.
The agreement will see the introduction of a course to train workers in the making of gold jewellery and use of gems.

Mr Phouvong Phamisith briefs the gathering about the purpose of the agreement. The Gold Jewellery and Gem Association of Laos is given a certificate of organisation registration by the Domestic Trade Department of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce.

It is hoped that people with an artistic bent will want to learn the intricate art of jewellery making and gain new skills of professional goldsmiths.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, President of the Gold Jewellery and Gem Association of Laos, Mr Phouvong Phamisith, said that the tripartite cooperation pact aimed to develop more skilled people for employment in the gold and gem sector.
“Our association works to create networks between gold and gem traders and was set up by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce in 2005. As of today, a total of 168 gold and jewellery shops are members of the association,” he said.
The association aims to strengthen and enhance the role of its members by building their capacity, sharing trade information related to the region, and other important activities that unite and bolster the gold and gem industry in Laos.
“We hope that this new cooperation will contribute to human resource development and give young people new and useful skills that will enable them to embark on a worthwhile profession as jewellery makers and goldsmiths,” Mr Phouvong said.
The cooperation agreement was signed by the President of the Gold Jewellery and Gem Association of Laos, Mr Phouvong Phamisith, Director of the Lao-German Technical College Mr Khamsavay Yommilavong, and Deputy Director of the National Institute of Fine Arts, Mr Mick Saylom.
Deputy Minister of Education and Sports Dr Sourioudong Soundara along with other director generals and deputy director generals from the ministries of Home Affairs; Information, Culture and Tourism; and Industry and Commerce were also present at the signing ceremony.
