Taskforce announces 11 new Covid cases

Eleven new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed on Saturday, bringing the countrywide total since March last year to 1,990, the National Taskforce for Covid-19 Prevention and Control told a press briefing.
The new infections were discovered after 1,842 samples were tested for the virus.

Meanwhile, 1,859 Covid patients have been discharged from hospitals while others will remain in Mitthaphab Hospital in Vientiane and in Savannakhet, Champassak and Luang Prabang provincial hospitals until they twice test negative for the virus.
Leading the press briefing on behalf of the taskforce, Deputy Director General of the Department of Communicable Diseases Control of the Ministry of Health, Dr Phonepaseuth Xayamongkhoun, gave an update on the Covid outbreak.
Three of the new Covid cases were recorded in Vientiane and were community-acquired, while the rest occurred in Champassak province and are believed to be imported.
Dr Phonepaseuth urged everyone to act responsibly and to continue to comply with all of the Covid-19 prevention measures and lockdown rules.
Although the number of new cases of Covid-19 continues to fall, the government is continuing measures to contain the spread of the virus in target areas of Vientiane.
Some 3,968 people have been admitted to 51 quarantine centres across the country and samples taken from them are being tested for the virus.

Health officials urge anyone who believes they have come into contact with an infected person to self-isolate for 14 days.
The lockdown has been extended until June 19, with restrictions to continue in areas of infection known as red zones, while some virus control measures have been eased.
