Johnson & Johnson vaccine rollout planned for August 2

Health workers plan to begin administering the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine across the country on August 2, although vaccinations in some priority areas got under way on July 26, according to the Centre of Information and Education for Health.

These areas were prioritised because of high infection rates and low vaccine uptake, and include Champassak, Savannakhet, Khammuan and Saravan provinces.
Director General of the Department of Hygiene and Health Promotion under the Ministry of Health, Dr Phonepaseuth Ounaphome, said the main rollout of the 1,008,000 doses of Johnson & Johnson was scheduled to begin on August 2 after the vaccine had been delivered to provincial health authorities.
“The Johnson & Johnson vaccine has been donated to Laos by the government of the United States. When all of the doses have been administered, 29 percent of the population will have been fully vaccinated,” he added.
Dr Phonepaseuth Ounaphome called on members of the public, especially those living in Vientiane, to pre-register on the website Lao SuSu, to arrange a vaccination appointment.
The government is aiming to vaccinate 50 percent of the total population by the end of this year.
To date, 1,059,960 people have had a first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, equalling 14.45 percent of the population, while 769,975 people have had two doses, amounting to 10.49 percent of the population, according to the National Taskforce for Covid-19 Prevention and Control. In Vientiane, 43.5 percent of the population have had a first dose and 31.3 percent have had two doses. In Bokeo province, 39.9 percent of the population have had a first dose and 33.3 percent have had both doses.
Provinces recording low vaccination rates include Huaphan, where only 5.3 percent of people have had one injection and 3.9 percent have had two, while in Champassak 8 percent of people have had a first dose and 5.6 percent have had two doses.
