Over 15,000 crimes reported in last five years

Ministry of Public Security officials resolved over 8,000 crimes committed in the country over the past five years, with traffic offences and drug dealing being the most common cases.
The figure was reported by the Deputy Minister of Public Security and Deputy Party Secretary, Major General Kongthong Phongvichit, during the 11th Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party last week.
A total of 15,413 crimes were recorded in the past five years, of which public security officials resolved 8,363 cases, or 54.25 percent.
Some 1,358 crimes were related to financial misdemeanours, of which 905 cases were resolved, equalling 65,34 percent. Another 14,793 crimes concerned the abuse or trade of illegal drugs, with 12,960 cases being settled, amounting to 84.08 percent of cases.
Ministry officials also recorded 29,655 road accidents, in which 50,316 vehicles were damaged, 47,245 people sustained injures, and 5,263 people died.
The total cost of the damage incurred exceeded 443 billion kip, Major General Kongthong said.
Over the past five years, public security officers have been working to maintain law and order for the benefit of society.
In the years ahead, public security officers will aim to improve their standard of work and provide more vehicles and technical support to ensure the success of their operations.
The ministry will try to supply sufficient numbers of officers and hold training courses on security methods for those involved in patrol and security duties at important government events, aiming to ensure complete safety.
