Yunnan extends support for prevention of second Covid-19 outbreak

Laos is still at risk of Covid-19 entering the country as the virus continues to spread around the world, so the recent preventive and protective materials provided by China will boost the country’s capacity to combat the disease.
Yunnan has previously dispatched a team of medical experts to Laos to help establish a laboratory to test people for Covid-19.
As of November 30, some 39 people had tested positive for the virus in Laos.
These facts were reported by Deputy Minister of Health Mr Khamphone Phoutthavong when receiving a donation of medical supplies worth about US$300,000 from the Vientiane Representative Office of Yunnan Commerce.
Political Affairs Consultant from the Embassy of China to the Lao PDR, Mr Zieng Fangxieng, presented the aid package to Mr Khamphone, in the presence of senior ministry officials.
Mr Khamphone thanked the Chinese government and people for their assistance with Laos’ Covid-19 response.
China has provided a lot of medical supplies and specimen collection equipment as well as training Lao staff in the anti-Covid-19 response, he said.
The assistance is part of efforts to enhance virus prevention and control. Apart from test kits, Beijing will later ship face masks and other personal protective supplies to Laos.
As part of a community with a shared future, China is facing the same difficulties as Laos and plans to jointly strengthen virus prevention and control, and steadily push forward bilateral cooperation, Mr Zieng Fangxieng said.
The first two cases of Covid-19 in Laos were reported in March.
Numerous countries and international organisations have provided medical supplies to the Lao government to help prevent the spread of the virus.
The government of Vietnam granted US$10,000 to assist Laos while the government of Japan provided personal protective equipment to the Ministry of Health.
The donation included 4,680 isolation gowns, 6,100 gloves, 6,000 N95 masks, 13,200 surgical masks, 27 goggles, and 240 bottles of alcohol hand-rub.
The US government provided personal protective equipment via the US Agency for International Development, including 440 goggles, 1,500 surgical gowns, 220 face shields, biohazard disposal bags, aprons, N95 face masks, safety boxes, gloves, and hand sanitiser.
The government of Thailand gave 2,040 bottles of hand-cleanser and 50,000 medical gloves to the Ministry of Health. The United Nations’ Children’s Fund has also given personal protective equipment to the Ministry of Health.
