What are the pros and cons of social media?

As social media is now a part of everyday life, it is important for children and young people to learn how to communicate online, prepare for future opportunities in the workplace, and interact appropriately with friends and family. Vientiane Times asked some young people for their thoughts on social media.

Ms Toulavanh Senyotha, a resident of Hadxaifong district, Vientiane: For me, the advantages are great communication through the use of numerous applications relating to online sales, food delivery, and taxi services. I also use this platform to learn about scholarships, jobs and so on. But it’s important to remember that personal information can be accessed by hackers, so we should think carefully about how much we put in the public domain.
Monk Somboun Soukphahong, Sisattanak district, Vientiane: As we all know, social media plays a very important role in our daily life. It makes so many things easier by saving time in obtaining information, saving us money, and making it easy to get in touch with each other. It certainly has become a part of people’s lives. But there are also disadvantages. It’s all too easy to become addicted to social media and you can forget about what’s going on in the real world round about and get lost in an online world. And of course we can’t always trust all the information that’s posted.
Ms Manisa Phomachan, a student at the National University of Laos: Social media brings me the news more quickly and in a modern and convenient way. I can earn money from it as well by selling things online, promoting products and so on. On the other hand, it costs us money to use it, while some people use it to give vent to their emotions and some use it fraudulently to cheat others out of their money.
Ms Linda Keosengdeuan, a student at the National University of Laos: For me, it provides an easy connection with the rest of the world, but if you don’t fully understand what’s going in there may be undesirable consequences. Among the benefits are the fact that you can see someone without them being in front of you. And if someone is busy, you can leave them a message so they can reply later. You can also meet new people from different cultures and ethnicities. Social media is a way to reach out and connect. Although social media can be a great thing, it also has its disadvantages. More and more people now interact through social media more than taking part physically in social gatherings or meetings. Even friends and families tend to communicate this way all the time instead of spending quality time face to face. With social media we can start to lose friends and family bonds if we’re not careful.
Mr Fengha Xayxongma, a student in Xieng Khuang province: Social media is a great way to connect with friends and family. Even if we live far away, we can still stay connected and it feels like we’re always together. You can see posts and pictures about what your friends and family are doing so you get to experience it with them. One bad thing about social media is that even when friends and families are together, they spend more time online than talking to each other. It takes up too much of their time, which isn’t good.
Ms Douangchit Yang, a student at the National University of Laos: In my opinion, social media has both advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand we can share everything widely, it’s a great source of information and helps to broaden our outlook, and students can do their assignments by getting information this way. But there are privacy problems that people should be aware of, and social media can change people`s habits and behaviour. It can also be time-wasting and take precedence over work.
