China backs construction of ballroom at NCC

China will fund construction of a building to be attached to the National Convention Centre (NCC) to serve as dining areas for VIP guests including heads of state, heads of government and ministers.

The signing of an agreement on the project took place on Friday.

Representing the two sides in signing the agreement were Deputy Minister and Deputy Head of Prime Minist er's Office Dr Viengsavanh Duangsavanh and Economic and Trade Attache to Chinese Embassy in Laos, Mr Wang Qi Hui.

The construction will be a single -storey building attached to the conference centre over a total area of 3,450 sq. m.

The building will have one grand ball room to accommodate 800 to 1,000 guests, a dining room for heads of state or government that can accommodate 15 to 20 people, a dining room for ministers that can accommodate 60 to 80 people, kitchen and supply storage as well as rooms for related purposes.

The grand ball room will be designed to split into three smaller halls as required.

A control room will take care of coordinating the indoor lighting, climate and all related needs.

China is a major provider of official development assistance (ODA) to Laos.

The neighbouring country previously financed the construction of the National Conference Centre, the venue of las t year's successful 28th and 29th Asean Summits and 2012's Ninth Asia-Europe Summit meetings.

The new construction will begin by late this year and take two years for completion.

After the signing of the agreement, L ao side will provide Chinese side additional technical information within one month, and the Chinese side will take four months for detail survey and design.

According to the initial survey, the project is set to cost around 78.3 million yuan or around 97 billion kip.
