Japan grants 960 million kip to develop Savannakhet agriculture

The Japanese government has granted assistance of more than 960 million kip (approximately US$115,000) for construction of an irrigation system in Thapangthong district of Savannakhet province.
The agriculture-related project is through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP) with construction to commence after agreement signing. The project aims to improve agricultural production in Savannakhet province by constructing an irrigation system.
The assistance agreement was signed at a ceremony in Vientiane on Thursday between Ambassador of Japan to Laos, Mr Takeshi Hikihara and representative of Agriculture and Forestry department in Savannakhet province, Mr Sonekham Sengvilay.
The project will construct an irrigation system in an area where residents have been engaged in rain-fed agriculture where the current quality and amount of rice harvested depends on the weather.
The system is expected to not only increase rice yields but will also allow the planting of two crops a year, which will lead to improvements in living standards in the area.
“It is critically important that the benefits of the projects should be enjoyed by people in the respective local communities as this is the most significant characteristic of GGP,” Mr Takeshi Hikihara said.
Local farmers’ living standards will be upgraded because the project will result in the saving of water for use in agriculture as opposed to the past when the weather affected farming production, he added.
Mr Sonekham Sengvilay thanked the government of Japan for helping the local community and hoped that the irrigation would improve the farmers’ living conditions.
Mr Takeshi Hikihara added that Japan has so far supported 36 agriculture projects in Laos since 1989 including 20 irrigation systems.
