Resident Representative of KOICA Laos office, MrHahngjoo Kim and Director General of the General Police Department at the Ministry of Public Security, Brigadier BounmySengkhamyong signed the Record of Discussions on February 13 in Vientiane to move the project forward.

The signing ceremony was also witnessed by Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Laos, Mr Yun Kang-hyeon, Minister of Public Security, Major General SomkeoSilavong and officials from both sides.

The project aims to establish an integrated immigration system based on international standards for enhancing the immigration management capability and the sector's work environment in Laos.

The project consists of construction of new Immigration Department office buildings and developing the integrated immigration system of Laos. KOICA also agreed to support capacity building of Lao officials by hosting invitational training in the Republic of Korea and dispatching Korean experts to provide necessary technical guidance and advice for the successful implementation of the project.

Before signing the Record of Discussions, KOICA sent a group of experts to Laos to conduct the feasibility study and the implementation survey for this project. As a result of the experts' visits, KOICA established a detailed plan for the project's implementation and finalised the Record of Discussions with the Ministry of Public Security based upon mutual agreement.

Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Laos, Mr Yun Kang-hyeon said, “The number of tourist arrivals in Laos is increasing by 10-14 percent each year on average. By enhancing the immigration system of Laos more efficiently and effectively, it is expected to be a driving force of promoting tourism and greatly contributes to accelerate national economic development”.

Minister of Public Security, Major General SomkeoSilavong stated, “The project will greatly contribute to improvement of national credibility by enhancing national security with an accurate immigration screening system,”

“Through the successful implementation, I believe it will attract more foreign investors and ultimately will contribute to the economic development of Laos” he added.
