Laos, Vietnam to further educational development
Laos and Vietnam have signed an agreement to further cooperation on education and human resource development between the two neighbouring countries.
The agreement signing ceremony was held during the 39th meeting of the Vietnam-Laos Intergovernmental Committee on February 8 in Hanoi, Vietnam and reaffirmed the two countries' foreign policy priorities in developing friendship and cooperation.
The agreement was inked between the Minister of Education and Sports of Laos, M s Sengdeuane Lachanthaboun and the Minister of Education and Training of Vietnam, Mr Phung Xuan Nha.
In 2017, the Vietnamese government has provided 1,000 scholarships to Lao students and officials to study in Vietnam, while the Lao government has also provided some 60 scholarships to Vietnamese students and officials to study in Laos.
These scholarships will support students in various fields, within the programmes of bachelor's degrees, higher courses and short term-training courses.
The Vietnamese scholarships have been distributed to education institutions and several ministries in Laos.
Education and training cooperation between Laos and Vietnam have also been expanded.
More than 14,000 Lao students and officials study in Vietnam, funded by several sectors including the state, private sector , NGOs, exchange scholarships as well as grants from Vietnamese private enterprises which invest in Laos.
During the signing of the agreement, the two ministries agreed that education and human resource development and capacity building is increasing among employees in Laos and that this will enable them to better support economic development in the country.
Some education institutions where Lao students are studying in Vietnam have improved their facilities and Lao students have received a better education during their studies in Vietnam.
Laos and Vietnam are not only cooperating in education; the two countries also cooperate on trade and investment. Vietnamese enterprises have registered to invest US$5.1 billion in Laos, ranking third among foreign investors in the country. Two-way trade between the two countries in 2016 hit US$801 million.
The two sides are also cooperating on science and technology, natural resources and the environment, agriculture, telecommunications, labour, culture, museums and tourism.
About 100,000 Lao tourists visited Vietnam in the first nine months of 2016, while the number of Vietnamese visitors to Laos reached 760,500 in the period, up 20 percent year-on-year.
Vietnam helped Laos develop agricultural and broadcasting projects in Xieng Khuang and Oudomxay provinces by providing official development assistance.
The two nations also closely cooperate at regional and international forums and coordinate with other Asean member nations in building the Asean Community.
This year, the two sides will celebrate 40 years since the signing of the Vietnam-Laos Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (July 18, 1997) and the 55th anniversary of the two countries' diplomatic ties.
