Laos, La Francophonie pledge continuous cooperation

Laos and the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) have pledged to continue cooperation in various sectors.
This pledge was relayed at the meetings between Lao officials and high-level delegates from the OIF during the visit to Laos by OIF Administrator, Mr Adama Ouane on March 14-15 to help mark International Francophonie Day 2018 which is observed on March 20.
On Wednesday afternoon, OIF Administrator Ouane met with Minister of Health. Assoc Prof. Dr Bounkong Syhavong which was followed by a visit to Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office in charge of Francophonie affairs, Mr Bounkeuth Sangsomsak.
At their meeting, the minister welcomed the visit to Laos by the high-level OIF delegation, especially the visit of Administrator Ouane, which was his first visit to the Lao PDR since taking up the post in 2015, and also his first visit to Southeast Asia.

Mr Bounkeuth thanked the Organisation intrnationale de la Francophonie for the assistance to Laos in various fields in the past. He highly valued the longstanding cooperation between the country and the OIF which he said was a milestone of the ties between the country and the international organisation.
Meanwhile, Mr Ouane relayed his pride at the continued promotion of cooperation between the two sides, and the promotion of the cooperation between Laos and other members of the OIF.
On the same day, the OIF Administrator Adama Ouane also met with Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce, Mr Bounmy Manivong to discuss cooperation in the sector.
Administrator Adama Ouane yesterday also met with Minister of Education and Sports, Ms Sengdeuane Lachanthaboun, Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr Savankhone Razmountry, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Sengphet Houngboungnouang and National Assembly Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman, Prof. Dr Eksavang Vongvichit.
During the meeting with the OIF administrator, Deputy Minister Savankhone proposed the continuation of OIF financial support for Le Rénovateur magazine in the framework of French language promotion in Laos.
The deputy minister also proposed the OIF assist the information sector in professional training, especially news writing skills and TV programme production including French language documentaries for young civil servants and employees with the aim of strengthening the capacity of the sector while also broadening the use of the French language.
Assistance with cultural heritage conservation training for young employees and the provision of electronic equipment for the related work was also in the proposal by the deputy minister to OIF.
Mr Savankhone has also informed the OIF delegation about the country’s announcement of 2018 as Visit Laos Year to boost tourism in the country, and the nation’s preparations to propose Hin Nam No National Park to be listed as a UNESCO natural heritage site.
The visit of the OIF delegation to the Asia-Pacific region is a significant milestone to promote cooperation ties with member countries in this and other regions preparing to organise an official ceremony and activities to celebrate this year’s International Francophonie Day on March 20.
Laos’ official celebration of International Francophonie Day 2018 will take place on March 28 in Champassak province.
