Ministry, Songmeunang to cooperate for silk production

The Ministry of Science and Technology has signed an agreement with Songmeunang Handicraft Group to conduct research in sericulture technology for the development of silk production in Laos.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the project was signed in Vientiane on Friday by the Acting Director General of the Biotechnology and Ecology Institute, Mr Ratsamy Phanthavong, and the Songmeunang Handicraft Group President, Dr Keosaychay Sayasone.

The event was also attended by the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Boviengkham Vongdara, the President of the Lao Handicrafts Association, Mr Hansana Sisane, and officials .

The project is aimed at conducting research on sericulture technology for silk production and supporting the sericulture sector in Laos for the development of the silk industry.

The project's activities include seeking funds to implement the scheme, constructing sericulture farms according to the findings of research and skills from within the country and abroad.

Speaking at the ceremony where the MoU was signed, Mr Ratsamy said, “Sericulture is one of sources of livelihood for the Lao people and the silk production units need the meet the demand for products in markets in the country and abroad.” He added, “This cooperation will contribute to the conduct of research, lead to activities for the development of Lao silk and contribute to the socio-economic development of the country.”
