Nam Ngum 1 dam announces major water release

Operators of the Nam Ngum 1 hydropower plant are informing communities downstream of the reservoir that water will be released from tomorrow onwards to ease rising water levels.
EDL-Generation Public Company issued the announcement on August 9 to allay public concerns in wake of the Nam Ngum reservoir’s rising water level in recent days due to continuous heavy rainfall.
The plant will open four spillways and an estimated 148,449 cubic metres per second will be discharged from the dam. This will increase the level of water in the Nam Ngum River by 5-10 cm.
Releasing water from the dam will not significantly affect people living along  the river, but they should be aware of possible rising water levels this month and in September as well as other severe conditions due to further heavy rain.
Furthermore, it was important for people to closely follow weather forecasts, especially those living along the banks of the river, the company said.
EDL-Generation Public Company’s announcement aims to ensure that people in the area are well informed and receive reliable facts.
Villagers should be prepared to relocate their livestock and other property if need be with the release of the spillway water.
Throughout July and the start of this month, the Nam Ngum reservoir’s inflows have appreciably increased.
