PM tells Xieng Khuang to fight corruption, illegal car imports, logging

Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith has directed the leadership of Xieng Khuang province to intensify the fight against corruption, illegal logging and drug smuggling.

The premier issued the directive during talks with top provincial officials on Wednesday as part of his two-day working tour to the northern province.

“The Prime Minister underlined the need to pay more attention to addressing illicit drug smuggling, illegal logging and corruption,” the Deputy Head of the provincial Administrative Office, Mr Viengthong Bounthaphone, told Vientiane Times .

The provincial governor, Dr Somkot Mangnormek, and other provincial officials attended the meeting.

The Premier told the province to take immediate action to punish corrupt officials within the provincial management. PM Thongloun suggested that provincial high-level officials under the management of central organisations found to be involved in corruption should be sent to the central organisations to be punished in line with relevant laws, according to Mr Viengthong.

The authorities were told to keep addressing the issue of 400 vehicles illegally imported into the province. A number of cases involving illegally-imported cars have already been resolved.

The province was told to re-define and re-allocate vehicles for top provincial officials in line with the Prime Ministerial Decree No 15 that is aimed at encouraging frugality.

The decree states that a provincial governor will be provided with two vehicles: a car no bigger than 2,500 cc and a pick-up with an engine capacity no greater than 2,500 cc, while deputy provincial governors will be provided with a car whose engine capacity does not exceed 2,000 cc.

Prime Minister Thongloun highlighted the need for provincial leaders to address bureaucratic issues, while ensuring that all civil servants fully exercise the relevant disciplines, local media reported.

In a move to prevent the leakage of revenue, the meeting was told to properly manage financial officials and to strive to remove further unexploded ordnance (UXO), which had heavily impacted the province during the Indochina War.

The premier suggested the provincial officials should explore and utilise untapped potential to drive socio-economic development and improve the livelihoods of locals.

He called on the province to attach great importance to translating and realising the resolutions of the 10th Congress of the Lao Pe ople's Revolutionary Party.

The province was also told to attach great importance to maintaining social security and order conducive to socio-economic development.

During his tour of the northern province, Prime Minister Thongloun visited a s porting complex being constructed to host the National Games next year, agricultural production sites, UXO clearance site and a silk-skirt weaving group .
