SFL supports health sector improvements

Sante France–Laos (SFL) has provided grant funding of over 514,700 euro in assistance to Laos to support a project for the treatment of cardiovascular disease in two targeted areas of the country.

The signing ceremony was attended by Minister of Health, Associate Prof. Dr Bounkong Syhavong.

The two targeted areas are the capital Vientiane and Luang Prabang province, which have recorded an increasing number of cardiovascular diseases, health officials said.

The agreement was signed in Vientiane last week between the Director General of the Health Care Department of the Ministry of Health, Dr Champhomma Vongsamphanh, and the Director of SFL, Dr Alphonse Pluquailec, alongside the heads of the respective health departments.

This support forms part of a project titled “Cooperation Medical Surgery Services Project”, which will run for five years from 2016 to 2021, focused on improving the treatment of cardiovascular disease, pediatrics, bone surgery and other health sector priorities.

It has a particular focus on upgrading the capacity of health professionals when it comes to cardiovascular surgery and treatment of children's heart conditions.

Speaking at the signing ceremony on Thursday, Dr Champhomma stressed the importance of the project and said local people will be the prime beneficiaries alongside healthcare providers.

He said cardiovascular experts from SFL will help to improve health sector outcomes in relation to children's heart conditions, cardiovascular surgery and other fields.

SFL will also support regular training and skills upgrades for health personnel and the development of an effective local health system in terms of cardiovascular treatment.

Dr Pluquailec said the project will continue to provide surgery and treatment for children's heart conditions in Laos and that more than 200 children have benefitted from the project already.

“We will also hold field training for health officials at Mittaphab Hospital, Mahosot Hospital, Luang Prabang provincial hospital and Champasack provincial hospital,” he added.

Sante France-Laos is a humanitarian organisation whose purpose is to provide medical and paramedical assistance to Lao hospitals.

Founded in 1998, it was declared a public utility by decree on April 26, 2004. The association now has over 350 members and 300 volunteers including mobilised doctors.

They are working to continue developing education and training for health personnel, participating in activities such as outpatient care, recovery from medical and surgical treatment and introducing new medical techniques.
