Savannakhet upgrading three iconic tourist sites

Following Savannakhet’s declaration of Kaysone Phomvihane district as a city in May, the province is upgrading popular tourism sites in three districts in a bid to attract more visitors.
The three sites earmarked for improvement are Dong Natad National Protected Area in Kaysone Phomvihane city, the Monkey Forest (Dongling) of Champhon district and the historic Stone House (Heuan Hin) in Xayphouthong district.

An official of Savannakhet Provincial Information, Culture and Tourism Department, Mr Chanthachak Kittivong told Vientiane Times on Tuesday that the development plan for the Monkey Forest is already underway with work currently centred on construction of a fence around the Dongling area, which he expected would be completed this year.
According to the department, a development plan for Dong Natad National Protected Area is focused on identifying suitable tourism development adjacent to the natural attraction which is compatible with local residents’ lifestyles in order to attract more domestic and international tourists.
Meanwhile, the development plan for the Stone House in Xayphouthong district aims to carry out restoration work to protect the ancient shrine while promoting appropriate nearby tourism activities that fit in with the historical and cultural nature of the site.
Savannakhet province boasts numerous popular tourist sites including Ing Hang stupa and dinosaur museum in Kaysone Phomvihane city, That Phone stupa in Xayphouthong district, and Nanglao stupa in Vilabouly district.
According to the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, Savannakhet province has 116 officially designated tourist attractions including 74 natural sites, 29 cultural sites and 13 historical sites.
The province recorded 736,796 visitors last year down from 806,630 in 2016.
The province has 45 hotels with 2,031 rooms along with 160 guesthouses and resorts with 2,490 rooms.
