Savannakhet University campus design gets green light

The Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education and Sports has agreed for Coelacanth and Associates (C+A) and Marina Stankovic Achitekten BDA (Marina) to design a new campus for Savannakhet University.
The department on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with C+A and Marina to continue the design of the campus following the initiation of a schematic design in 2016.
The detailed design will take eight months to complete.
The agreement was signed between representatives of C+A and Marina, Mr Yasuyuki Ito and Ms Manilay Bouavong, and Director General of the Higher Education Department, Dr Saykhong Saynasine, witnessed by Deputy Minister of Education and Sports, Assoc. Prof. Dr Kongsy Sengmany.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Dr Saykhong said the MOU came under the Second Strengthening Higher Education Project, which is running from January 6, 2017, to December 31, 2021.
The project is being financed by US$45.67 million through a loan of US$16.45 million and funding of US$23.47 million from the Asian Development Bank, US$4.49 million from the Lao government, and US$1.26 million from Savannakhet University.
The project aims to raise higher education quality such as teaching, scientific research, and social services, along with creating modern learning schemes for higher education and enhancing the university’s management.
Dr Saykhong added that C+A’s and Marina’s campus design would focus on modern buildings, laboratories, dormitories and other infrastructure to meet the needs of the growing number of students.
The project will also support government efforts to meet the demand for higher-level skills, particularly in the growing manufacturing and service sectors as Laos moves away from an agriculture-based economy.
