Weather forecasters are warning of strong winds and heavy rain with hail across parts of the country from March 6-11 this week.
Thunderstorms and hail are expected to affect the provinces of Saravan, Savannakhet, Khammuan, Borikhamxay, Vientiane and Xaysomboun from March 6-9.
From March 7-10, the provinces of Huaphan, Phongsaly, Xieng Khuang, Xayaboury, Luang Prabang, Bokeo, Luang Namtha, Oudomxay, Xaysomboun, Vientiane, and the capital, are also warned to prepare for thunderstorms and hail, while squalls and lightning may hit some areas.
The weather alert was issued yesterday by the Weather Forecasting and Aeronautical Meteorology Division of the Meteorology and Hydrology Department.
Trees, houses, and other buildings and infrastructure could be damaged by wind and heavy rain as a high-pressure system bringing cooler temperatures moves in from China. A west wind will affect central and southern regions from March 6-11.
Meanwhile, the north of the country may experience a drop in temperatures in some places.
All regions should brace for thunderstorms and everyone is advised to listen out for further forecasts issued by the Meteorology and Hydrology Department.
The department issued the weather alert yesterday so that at-risk regions can prepare for strong winds and heavy rain, and take steps to prevent damage.
Thunderstorms and hail hit many provinces on February 21-22, which damaged electricity poles, houses, livestock, and crops, according to an official report.
In Vientiane, 22 electricity poles and power lines came down in Nongbeuk-tai village, Sikhottabong district, with damage estimated at more than 200 million kip.
Strong winds blew through a market in Nongtaeng-tai village, Sikhottabong district, and thunderstorms with hail were reported in Xaythany district.
Dwellings and other structures in Pakyan village, a rural area of Maed district in Vientiane province, were also damaged, affecting 24 households.
Some dwellings in Paek and Nonghet districts of Xieng Khuang province were damaged by thunderstorm activity and hail pounded on roofs.
In Viengkham district, Luang Prabang province, storms brought down trees and several buildings were damaged, including houses, as heavy rain and strong winds lashed the area.
A lightning strike reportedly led to the death of 27 cattle during a thunderstorm in Kaenthao district, Xayaboury province, with losses estimated at more than 160 million kip.
