Xamtay to Vietnam road construction expects delays
Construction of a new road connecting Xamtay district in Huaphan province to Thua Thien Hue province, Vietnam will not be finished according to plans, say officials of the project.
Head of the District's Public Works and Transport Office, Mr Soukaseum Sonesavat, telephone interviewed by Vientiane Times last week said of the progression, “We admit that the project will not be finished according to plans because the company lacks the construction equipment needed to work in this mountainous area.”
He said the road project was expected to be finished by the end of 2017 after work began in 2015 but is now just 70 percent complete with only the surfacing to be completed by the end of the year but that the project contractor will also build sidewalks.
A project official said that the Huaphan Public Works and Transport Department were discussing the delay and can be expected to have a reply for the general public in the near future.
The new road will be 67 km long and 7-11 metres wide according to the geographical conditions and is being built by the Chichaleun Road & Bridge Construction Company of Vietnam.
“When it's finished, the road will greatly assist local people in transportation”, Mr Soukaseum said.
The total cost of the two year project is around US$53 million (more than 429 billion kip) with finance coming from the Vietnamese government.
“This project aims to improve residents' access to basic services and facilitate the movement of goods, services between the two countries,” Mr Soukaseum added.
He explained that in the future, the road will help to reduce traffic congestion amongst local communities as the road passes through 10 villages in Xamtay district and will become one of the main highways in Huaphan when completed.
It is expected that the new road will also contribute to general development and poverty reduction among households in the area.
The road is being built to high standards so that it will be able to take heavy vehicles. Once finished it will dramatically reduce travel times between Xamtay district in Huaphan province and Thua Thien Hue province, Vietnam as well.
The new road is one of the many projects under the provincial Public Works and Transport Department seeking to develop current road infrastructure and improve transportation circulation between Laos and Vietnam.
