Media call for more information at Asean level

Jakarta, Indonesia: Regional media organisations meeting here have asked the Asean Secretariat to act as the headquarters of an information centre to promote Asean within the region.

The Secretariat gathered several media organisations from the region at the Asean Information and Media Dialogue on August 28, supported by the Japan-Asean integration Fund.

This was the first dialogue held to inform media stakeholders about the Asean information and media sector's work and future directions, and to enhance the media's understanding of key Asean issues, particularly, youth, women, and human rights issues, where media can catalyse improved public awareness.

The meeting also identified possible collaboration between the Senior Officials Responsible for Information (SOMRI) and the media to better facilitate the dissemination of information about Asean as a “Community of Opportunities”.

During the dialogue, speakers gave presentations including overviews of the Asean Strategic Plan for Information and Media 2016-2025, Information and Media Projects under the Asean Committee on Culture and Information (COCI), Media Policies and Industry Landscape of Japan, and Human Rights, Gender and the media. Some participants raised issues concerning the reporting of news in each Asean country and discussed solutions. Some proposed that the Asean Secretariat be a centre for providing prompt and multi-faceted information to regional media so that people in the region received wide ranging and timely news reports.

A representative from the Malaysian media asked the Secretariat to create an information platform at the Asean level for the sharing of information among the Asean media.

This was the first dialogue on Asean Information and Media after the recent meeting of the Asean COCI. The media used this stage to discuss ways to improve collaboration between the various organisations in the region towards better promoting Asean.
