The first Lao Tablet was unveiled at the IT Festa 2011 organised by the Faculty of Engineering at the National University of Laos in Vientiane.
XY Mobile is scheduled to launch the Lao Tablet during Pi Mai Lao (Lao New Year) next month along with a new mobile phone. The tablet will cost about US$330.
Specifications of the new tablet include a size of 196.7x115x13mm; Android 2.2 System with Flash 10.1 Web Supported; 7'' HD TFT Touch Panel; CPU Qualcomm MSM7227-1, ARM11, 800MHZ; 512MB DDR2 & 512MB Nand Flash; Wi-Fi and 3G supported; high-sensitivity G-sensor embedded; and USB, HDMI and Bluetooth connectivity.
“We've been developing software and a keyboard for this new tablet for the last few years. We want Lao people from every sector to be able to buy this device. The device uses high technology, but is good quality, affordable and uses the Lao language,” said Director of XY Mobile Anousak Souphavanh.
The tablet is aimed at education and business users but also offers standard consumer applications such as HD video playback and 3G UMTS/HSPA (850/1900/2100MHz), and GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) for calling functionality.
“After officially launching this tablet next month we plan to distribute it to mobile phone shops through the country. We will have dealers in central locations throughout Laos and we may sign contracts with mobile phone operators such as Lao Telecom, Tigo or Unitel to provide customers with choice,” Mr Anousak said.
“We are not concerned about competition in the market, because at this time we have the only product on the stage that is locally produced and adapted to local use.”
Customers can browse and download more than 1,000 free applications and games from the Android market, which is an online software store developed by Google for Android mobile devices connected to the Internet.
“We are now also working to develop applications for educational use. We plan to add some useful applications for Lao customers including, for example, a dictionary, educational games, utility bill payment, accounting and other simple applications that are useful for our modern daily life,” he said.
XY Mobile is a joint venture between the Lao company Xangdao Co., Ltd and Thai company Yozzo Co., Ltd.
