Govt vows to further improve business environment

The government cabinet has pledged to continue efforts to streamline procedures to better facilitate business operations.
The commitment was made as the cabinet concluded its monthly meeting for May which ended yesterday, according to a press statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.
The two-day meeting adopted a report that reviewed the progress made in implementing Prime Ministerial Order No. 02 on upgrading procedures and coordinated mechanisms among state departments to improve the business environment. However, details of the progress made were not provided.
Chaired by Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith, the meeting agreed to push forward with measures to overhaul the operations of Electricite Du Laos and Lao Airlines.

PM Thongloun prioritised the improvement of the two state-owned enterprises after learning that many enterprises were performing ineffectively.
The cabinet told the relevant ministries to create conditions that promoted small and medium-sized enterprises and to explore additional sources of revenue to diversify income streams.
The meeting also approved a report on reforestation and tree planting aimed at increasing forest cover to meet the set target of 70 percent by 2020. The meeting called for the relevant sectors to roll out publicity campaigns to encourage the general public to plant trees on National Arbor Day, which falls on June 1.
Also adopted at the meeting was a report on human resource development to meet socio-economic development needs.
Ministries were told to provide the necessary support to farmers to help them with crop planting this rainy season.
Participants heard a report on which wood products were eligible for export. In this regard, the meeting assigned the relevant sectors to revise the list and more clearly identify which wood products could be exported.
The meeting called for continuous efforts to comply with Prime Ministerial Order No. 15, which imposes tough measures to regulate the wood industry and ban the export of unfinished wood products in an attempt to address illegal logging and timber businesses. In addition, the meeting adopted a report on the management effort to address the duplication of land titles as well as measures to manage the issue.
The cabinet also adopted a report on the progress of Visit Laos-China Year 2019 over the past five months and a work plan for the rest of the year, and drafted an amendment to a presidential decree on fees and service charges.
The meeting was told to continue with the inspection of imported food items to prevent contaminated food from being imported. Ministries were told to prepare to celebrate the inscription of the Plain of Jars in Xieng Khuang province on UNESCO’s list of world heritage sites. The meeting called for improvements in treatment and healthcare in hospitals and dispensaries as well as in preventing the outbreak of diseases such as dengue fever.
Ministries were instructed to continue to resolve issues raised by members of the public through the government’s telephone hotline.
