Lao, Vietnam strengthen cooperation in science

Laos and Vietnam have agreed to further collaboration in the science and technology sector by sharing their academic work to enhance research in the two countries.
A cooperation agreement was signed in Vientiane on Friday between Director General of the Planning and International Cooperation under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Dr Khamphet Vongdara and Vice President of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Associate Prof. Dr Nguyen Vankhang.

Minister of Science and Technology, Prof. Dr Boviengkham Vongdara witnessed the signing ceremony. Under the agreement, the two parties will cooperate on exchanging technical expertise, two-way translation, exchange documents and share in the interpretation and publication of scientific papers.
Dr Khamphet said Vietnam would provide scholarships to Lao students and government officials to study in Vietnam for higher diplomas as well as bachelor and master’s degrees.
“Lao-Vietnamese cooperation has played an important role in the sustainable development of the science and technology sector in the country and made a positive contribution to peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region and the world in general,” he said.
“The agreement aims to enhance the capacity of officials to assist domestic development and international integration, and promote the scientific research achievements of both countries,” he said.
The proposed cooperation aimed to bolster the coordination and mutual support of the parties in implementing scientific projects and organising conferences, as well as provide a scientific basis for strengthening the special friendship and comprehensive cooperation between Laos and Vietnam, he added.
He noted the two countries would share their experiences of theoretical and practical issues relating to the development of human resources and international integration of Vietnam and Laos while assisting each other with training.
Dr Nguyen Vankhang said scientific research cooperation was discussed recently when Lao scientists responded to scientific information provided by Vietnam to further build friendship and solidarity between both nations.
Vietnam will support Lao scientists’ requests for assistance with the development of their work and Vietnam confirmed that the two countries would continue to publish each other’s research.
