Luxembourg continues to back Laos in development

Luxembourg will continue to support Laos in its socio-economic development targeting the graduation from least developed country status by 2024, and sustainable development.
The confirmation was made by Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn as the high-ranking official of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg met with Lao Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Saleumxay Kommasith, who was visiting the European country last week at the invitation of his Luxembourgish counterpart.

The two ministers highly valued the excellent friendship and cooperation between Laos and Luxembourg since they established diplomatic relations on September 25, 1997.
Luxembourg has assisted Laos in priority sectors such as education, health, tourism, UXO clearance, hospitality and services, finance and banking, and rural and infrastructure development.
The Luxembourg assistance to Laos is part of the Indicative Cooperation Programme (ICP) being implemented over four phases, with a total value of 178 million euros.
The first ICP phase was implemented from 2003 to 2006 valued at 18 million euros, the second from 2007 to 2010 at 35 million euros, the third from 2011 to 2015 at 50 million euros, and the fourth ICP began in 2016 and will finish next year valued at 75 million euros.
Mr Saleumxay, representing the Lao government and people, expressed his gratitude to the government and people of Luxembourg for the valuable assistance to progressively and successfully implement socio-economic development, contributing to the livelihood improvement of the multi-ethnic people.
The two sides discussed future cooperation, including the collaboration between the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Luxembourgish Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, and exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.
During the visit, Minister Saleumxay and his delegation also met with Minister of Cooperation and Humanitarian Action, Ms Paulette Lenert, and paid a courtesy visit to Prime Minister Xavier Bettel.
