1. Southern islands face steep decline in tourism
The number of tourists visiting the twin island getaways of Don Det and Don Khon in the Si Phan Don (4,000 Islands) area of Khong district, Champassak province has dramatically fallen say local authorities.
The Head of the Boat Tour Association in Nakasang village, Khong district, Mr Bounseum Chanthalangsy told Vientiane Times during a visit to the village last week that the port of Nakasang would normally receive over 50,000 visitors travelling to Don Det and Don Khon in previous years, but that this year it was believed that the number has drastically dropped.. 2. Govt mulls new State investment projects
Laos’ budgetary tensions have forced the government to cut spending in State investment projects in a move to prevent the country from being dragged further into chronic debt.
Therefore some new State investment projects planned for this year might be postponed until next year following the government’s projection that the country’s revenue collection will attain only 96 percent of the annual target.. . More >>>

3. German assistance celebrated by unveiling of sculpture
Over the past three years of the diplomatic mission much of the German assistance that has been provided to Laos has been through efforts of the Embassy of Germany in Vientiane, with a focus on rural development and vocational training. This effort was celebrated by the Lao-German Friendship Association at a ceremony held at the German Embassy last week to unveil “Buddy Bear”, a sculpture symbolising the friendship between the two countries.. . . 4. DPM pushes development in Champassak
Champassak province should close all loopholes relating to the timber trade, and review all the procedures that have frustrated investors and delayed development.

Information and technology experts and staff from the Be-Bound Company met in Vientiane recently to discuss use of an “offline internet” system in Laos. This technology is suitable for mobile devices in remote areas and aims to create opportunities using SMS that enables wide access to information at an affordable price.
