Health authorities admit that many parents still don’t know that early initiation of breastfeeding (within the first hour) improves the health and longterm wellbeing of a baby, because colostrum, or first milk, is rich in nutrients and protects a baby against disease. Infants who are exclusively breastfed have a reduced risk of various diseases such as asthma, diabetes, obesity, gastrointestinal infections, and diarrhoea.

Thaphabath district has been declared as a new solidarity district, the first of its kind for Borikhamxay province and the second solidarity district in the country. The new solidarity district was officially approved by the organising committee, the Lao Front for National Development in Thaphabath district, and residents and officials took part in a ceremony yesterday to celebrate the occasion.
