JICA, UXO-Laos collaborate on operations

Government officials and representatives of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) met in Vientiane last week for the first Joint Coordinating Committee meeting of a project that links the national unexploded ordnance programme with poverty alleviation.
The meeting was attended by National Programme Director of the Lao National Unexploded Ordnance Programme (UXO-Laos), Mr Bounphamith Somvichith, and the Senior Representative of JICA in Laos, Ms Akiko Sanada.
A key objective of the project is to integrate poverty alleviation and issues of development in to UXO-Laos’ annual work plan.   It is an extension of the ‘Project for Strengthening Management Capacity of Lao National Unexploded Ordnance Programme’ that was completed in 2018.
The current project will be carried out from January 2019 until January 2023 and will impact UXO-Laos offices in nine provinces including Luang Prabang, Huaphan, Xieng Khuang, Khammuan, Savannakhet, Saravan, Xekong, Champassak, and Attapeu.
The outputs for this project are the extension of planning process, enhanced utilisation of information technology by UXO-Laos in the nine provinces and an exchange of knowledge with The Cambodian Mine Action Centre.
Assistance from the Japanese government continues to be immensely valuable to the government and people of Laos.  Unexploded ordnance has been a major obstacle to the socio-economic development of the country and the efforts of Japan on this issue have helped UXO-Laos be more efficient and effective in managing the hugely complex problem.
