The 18th China-Asean Expo and China-Asean Business and Investment Summit opened on September 10 in Nanning, the capital of south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, pushing for the building of a China-Asean shared future.

- Fifth Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge over 14 percent complete
Construction of the fifth Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge linking Borikhamxay province to Bueng Kan province in Thailand across the Mekong River is 14.42 percent complete.
It is envisaged that the bridge will become another regional trade hub and transit route for Laos and neighbouring countries when finished.
Work on the project began at the beginning of January this year and the 14.42 percent completion figure exceeds the target set for August by 5.67 percent.
Project Director Mr Laythong Phommavong said work on the bridge is underway in Kuay Oudom village in Pakxan district, Borikhamxay province, about 10 km north of the main town in Pakxan district and 2,860 metres from Road No. 13 South.....More >>>

- Technology ministry backs ICT development with contest
The Ministry of Technology and Communications is continuing to push for the development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), hoping that the developers of new technologies in Laos will be competitive at the regional level.
As part of this drive, the ministry recently announced the winner of the Best ICT Product contest, who will compete in the Asean ICT Award 2021 contest, which this year takes place in Naypyidaw, Myanmar. ....More >>>

- Education ministry launches role model series to promote best teaching
The Ministry of Education and Sports is launching a new docuseries, ‘The Role Model Series’, with the support of Australia, to promote best teaching and inclusive education practices in Laos.
 The series will be disseminated via television, radio, newspapers and social media starting this month.
The docuseries will be dubbed in Lao Sign Language.
The objective is to promote the work of curriculum implementation role models throughout Laos to encourage others to apply best practices and boost the successful implementation of the new primary school curriculum.

Xayaboury villages flooded as tropical storm hits
Houses and farmland in Kaenthao district, Xayaboury province, have been flooded following heavy rain that fell on September 9-10, unleashed by tropical storm Con Son.
Some people are moving their belongings to safe ground with the assistance of provincial authorities, who will provide further updates on the situation as more information becomes available.
The Meteorology and Hydrology Department has warned people that tropical storm Con Son will pass over the southern and central provinces on September 11-13, while on September 13-15 the storm will pass over the northern and central provinces bringing thunderstorms, rain and squalls, while flooding and landslides are also possible.

- Billions of dollars required for GMS response to Covid
An initial list of priority projects worth US$3.1 billion has been identified to support the 2021-2023 Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Covid-19 Response and Recovery Plan, according to the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The US$3.1 billion will come from the Asian Development Bank and other financing sources, but details of the projects to be carried out in GMS countries including Laos have not yet been officially announced.

- US provides supplies worth US$530,000 to combat malaria
The United States has donated 70,000 mosquito nets, 450,000 malaria diagnostic kits and 200,000 antimalarial tablets, valued at more than US$530,000 to combat malaria.
USAID Country Representative to Laos, Mr Michael Ronning, presented the supplies to Minister of Health, Prof.Dr Bounfeng Phoummalaysith, in Vientiane on Friday. The malaria commodities are funded by the United States through the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United States of America’s President’s Malaria Initiative.
The supplies will be distributed to public health facilities and community health workers in areas of Laos where malaria cases remain high.
