Over 44,000 cases processed by People’s Supreme Court in past five years

The People’s Supreme Court has processed over 44,000 cases over the past five years, with most involving drugs and theft.

The work of the court was reported at the inaugural session of the National Assembly’s 9th legislature on Wednesday by the President of the People’s Supreme Court, Mrs Viengthong Siphandone.
During the past five years, the People’s Supreme Court has processed a total of 44,521 cases through the People’s Court and Military Court and dealt with 1,606 cases outstanding from the previous five years.
Of the total 46,127 cases, the courts were able to resolve 43,559 cases while 2,568 cases have yet to be finalised.
Most of the prosecutions involved drugs, with 10,864 cases being processed, while 2,348 cases involved property theft.
The committee of the People’s Supreme Court had revised the Law on Judges, Law on People’s Court and Law on Court Fees as well as drafted presidential decrees. This has led to improved clarity over the role of the People’s Supreme Court and local courts, Ms Viengthong said.
The committee has also overseen compliance with court judgements and rulings and recorded statistics, while seeking to address outstanding issues in providing more legislation.
In the years ahead, the People’s Supreme Court will provide more training for officials and upgrade its methods and equipment in line with modern developments.
