Australia promotes inclusive development in Laos with GEDSI Alumni Symposium

More than 120 Australian alumni, Lao government representatives, and civil society partners gathered in Vientiane on August 26 for the Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) Alumni Symposium 2026, themed “Advancing Inclusion through Localised Leadership, Learning, and Partnerships in Lao PDR.” 
Launched by the Deputy Head of Mission of the Australian Embassy in Laos, Ms Benita Sommerville, the Symposium focused on practical approaches to advancing GEDSI in Laos. Australia’s Ambassador for Gender Equality, the Hon. Michelle O’Byrne, made a special guest appearance through a pre-recorded message, reaffirming Australia’s commitment to GEDSI.
“When women, persons with disabilities, ethnic communities, young people and other underrepresented groups can participate fully, communities are stronger and opportunities are shared more fairly,” Ms O’Byrne said.

One of the highlights of the event was a keynote address by Australian alumna Ms Bouphamany Chounramany, Executive Board Member of the Lao Business Women Association and Manager of Alliance International Medical Centre, who reflected on the importance of local leadership in driving change.
“Localised leadership is not always about grand titles. It is about one woman opening a door for another-and that woman, in turn, holding the door open for someone else,” Ms Chounramany said.
Building on the 2025 symposium, this year’s event reinforced the important role of Australian alumni as leaders, advocates, and champions of change in driving inclusive development.
Sessions explored inclusive climate action, economic empowerment, accessibility and participation, and inclusive leadership in practice.
Australia supports the symposium through the Laos Australia Institute, working with alumni and partners to promote peer learning, cross-sector collaboration and locally led solutions that reflect community priorities.
By strengthening alumni leadership, knowledge, capabilities and partnerships, the Symposium helps turn GEDSI principles into practical action for a more inclusive and sustainable development in Laos.
