Traffic direction changes planned on city roads
The Vientiane Department of Public Works and Transport is preparing to introduce changes in the direction of traffic flow on nine main roads in the city centre.
The changes are part of the Vientiane Urban Sustainable Transport Project, aimed at easing congestion and making roads safer.
The roads in question are being resurfaced, while road signs and new traffic lights will be installed, and directional arrows painted on traffic lanes.
Chao Fa Ngum Road (inbound) will be one-way; Sithan Road will be one-way (downward/exit); Khounboulom Road will be one-way (upward/entry); Rue Françoise d’Aubigné will be two-way; Nokeokoummane Road will be two-way; Manthatourath Road will be two-way; and the road in front of the French Embassy will be two-way.
Newly installed traffic signs on the nine roads will be covered until the new system comes into effect and the existing traffic lights will remain operational.
Traffic police will be on duty to direct traffic while the changes are being implemented.
The Department will issue a notice at a later date to inform road users when the new traffic system will come into effect.
In the meantime, officials urge motorists to drive with caution, saying that the temporary inconveniences will ultimately result in a more efficient and safer transport system.
