A medical team successfully implants Naltrexone Hydrochloride.

New implant marks significant progress in drug treatment

A new medical treatment designed to help people recovering from drug addiction has taken another step forward in Laos, after the Naltrexone Hydrochloride Implant was successfully registered with the Department of Food and Drugs under the Ministry of Health and first used on a patient on April 28.
A medical team from China performed the implantation in the presence of representatives from several institutions, including 103 Hospital, 5 April Hospital, Sena Hak Department, Setthathilat Hospital, the Narcotics Inspection and Control Office, Office 315, and the Somsanga Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre. The Naltrexone Hydrochloride Implant is intended for patients who have already completed detoxification and want support in avoiding relapse. The medication works by blocking the effects of opioid substances, including heroin and opium, while helping to reduce cravings and strengthen recovery.
The successful procedure is being seen as an important advance in the use of modern medical technology to address drug addiction in Laos and to expand treatment options for people seeking a stable, drug-free life.

The implant was previously introduced in Laos in August 2025, and was registered with the Department of Food and Drugs on March 7, 2025, under number 01I5859/25. It was developed by Shenzhen ScienCare Pharmaceutical Co Ltd and is exclusively imported and distributed by Mungmisai Pharmaceutical Sole Co Ltd.
That earlier launch brought together officials from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Public Security, hospitals, drug treatment centres, and development partners.
The product was presented as a long-term treatment option to improve adherence and reduce the risk of repeat drug use.
At the Somsanga Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre alone, around 1,900 people are admitted for treatment each year, highlighting the continuing need for more effective recovery tools, according to the previous report.
