President urges younger generation to play greater role in economic development
The younger generation should take more responsibility for their self-advancement and education, while also seeking to become productive members of society and dedicated family members.
Young people should also be patriotic and actively share in discussions on ways in which they can contribute to the economic development of Laos.
Youth are the nation’s right arm and the great hope of the nation, Party, state, and the general populace for the development of the economy, President Thongloun Sisoulith said when addressing the 70th anniversary celebration of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Youth Union (LPRYU) in Vientiane yesterday.

The event was attended by current and former Party and state leaders, retired employees of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Youth Union and senior revolutionaries, and youth members from central and local branches of the Union.
Also speaking on the occasion, Secretary of the LPRYU Central Committee, Mr Monxay Laomuasong, said “Throughout seven glorious decades, the blue warriors under the umbrella of our Party’s flag, and the leadership of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Youth Committee, have shouldered great historical responsibilities during different periods of time and have been able to fulfill their historical responsibilities with dignity.”
“In the future, our Party will face even greater responsibilities in resolving economic, financial and monetary difficulties, including macroeconomic fragility,” he added.
“The Youth Board Committee must increase its efforts to prevent undermining of the policy of peaceful transition by elements that are hostile to the new regime. The phenomenon of social degradation is continuously occurring, education is facing difficulties, the cost of living is spiralling, and we face many other obstacles,” Mr Monxay said.
“For development in the new era, we must actively continue to foster unity within the Party, encourage young people to be more competitive and broaden youth participation from the central to the local and grassroots levels,” Mr Thongloun said.
Young people of all ethnic groups must be more determined and resolute, take firm and decisive responsibility and not be afraid of the red storm and winds, and must devote their youthful strength, energy and intellect to the new revolutionary cause, he added.
“We must be united in protecting and developing the nation and firmly advancing socialist goals, and must raise the level of education and training of youth workers, youth members, and Lao youth of all ethnic groups so they develop strong political values,” the President said.
Young people should have revolutionary moral qualities, love their country, firmly support the democratic system, know how to preserve and promote their fine traditions, adopt a good lifestyle, be diligent in their studies, and constantly improve their knowledge and abilities so they become skilled workers and worthy successors to the current leadership, he advised.
“We also must create strong young workers who are role models in terms of thought, word and deed. They must be broad-minded, be active role models and leaders in all areas of work, and have specific knowledge and skills in various fields.”
“They should also learn a foreign language, know how to use advanced technology and, most importantly, use revolutionary moral qualities to develop themselves, society, and the nation,” the President said.He also stressed the need for youth committees at every level and in each locality to actively lead youth members in implementing all forms of national development tasks, by fulfilling their political duties at every level and involving all young people in efforts to benefits themselves, society, and the nation.
Youth organisations at every level must guide young people in understanding the fine traditions of the nation and Party, and cultivate a love of learning, discipline, and hard work, Mr Thongloun said.
