New houses built for members of Gree ethnic group in Xayabouly
Xayabouly province authorities recently handed over the Gree ethnic housing project, situated in the Phonethong village conservation forest in Pheng district, according to the Paxason newspaper.
The initiative marks a significant step toward improving the small community’s living conditions and promoting sustainable livelihoods.
The handover event was attended by the Governor of Pheng district, Mr Kongxay Xayalath, officials from the Xayabouly Provincial, Culture and Tourism Department, and members of the Gree ethnic group.
The project committee reported on efforts to assist the Gree people, who have traditionally lived within the Nam Pui National Protected Area, where they rely on natural resources for their survival.
The group currently consists of 19 individuals, including 10 women.
In June 2024, a resolution was adopted to temporarily resettle the group at the Phasaeng site within the Phonethong conservation area.
This was followed by the construction of five houses and the introduction of sustainable practices such as agriculture, livestock farming, hygiene awareness, and basic life skills, to support their transition to a more settled and self-sufficient way of life.
By the end of 2024, land was allocated for both housing and agriculture. Five houses were built together with a sanitation facility consisting of a toilet and three rooms, at a total cost of over 300 million kip.
The initiative not only provides secure shelter but also opens the door to new opportunities, enabling the Gree people to gradually build resilience and achieve greater self-reliance.
