Flood warning issued for Xong and Namxan river areas

The Meteorology and Hydrology Department is urging people living near the Xong River in Vangvieng district, Vientiane province, and the Namxan River in Borikhan district, Bolikhamxay province, to be prepared for flooding.
On Wednesday the Vangvieng hydrology station measured the level of the Xong River, which flows through the centre of the town, at 3.92 metres, well above the flood warning level of 3.5 metres and approaching the danger level of 4.5 metres.
Meanwhile, the level of the Namxan River in Borikhan district, Bolikhamxay province, was recorded at 7.43 metres, above the flood warning level of 7 metres but below the danger level of 8 metres.
The Meteorology and Hydrology Department warns that more flooding is likely in the northern and central provinces because of heavy rain forecast from June 30 to July 4.
Flooding occurred in Kasy district, Vientiane province, on Wednesday after many hours of heavy rain, but the situation has now reportedly returned to normal.
Last month, rivers in Yot Ou district, Phongsaly province, burst their banks and flooded houses and farmland.
Elsewhere, the residents of 54 villages in Khongxedon district, Salavan province, also suffered the effects of flooding.
