Sisamoud Joumjim is a family legacy rich in flavor, not just a restaurant. The story started in Sihom village back here in 1998, as owner Ms Bouakhay Phiathep explains.
Her mother, renowned fishmonger Ms Sisamoud, founded it; her in-depth knowledge of her craft served as the restaurant’s cornerstone.
Starting from a humble eatery, her reputation for quality preceded her.
The business flourished, leading to the opening of a second branch in Khounta village, Sikhottabong district.
Today, the original Sihom location remains the flagship, now under the dedicated management of Ms Bouaxay, whose daughter continues to honour the family legacy.
The restaurant’s decor is simple and welcoming, designed to make you feel at home.
It offers several areas to cater to customers’ differing needs. There is a bustling main hall for general diners, private VIP rooms ideal for intimate family meals, and larger VVIP rooms perfect for hosting important guests or celebratory gatherings.
For those who enjoy a view, the breezy rooftop terrace offers a lovely spot to dine while taking in the city lights.
The true heart of Sisamoud lies in its bubbling pots. The foundation of their fame is the broth, a closely guarded family recipe that delivers a well-rounded flavour. Diners can choose between the classic fish broth or a Lao herb spicy hotpot (jaew hon) base.
The secret to their success is an unwavering commitment to quality. The fish in particular is a point of pride and comes straight from the Mekong River, delivered fresh.
Depending on the day’s catch, you will find succulent fish of various kinds on the menu.
The signature dish, an absolute must-try, is the fish hotpot (joum pa). Each set comes with a generous platter of fresh, crisp vegetables and noodles.
But the real secret ingredient, the one that sets Sisamoud apart, is the sliced taro that is added to the fish hotpot. As it cooks, it dissolves into the broth, lending a subtle sweetness and a wonderfully silky texture that perfectly complements the fish.
For those who prefer something grilled, the Lao barbeque (sindad) is another excellent choice. The restaurant offers both tender local pork and high-quality imported beef, catering to all tastes.
The sizzling dome, surrounded by a moat of flavourful broth for cooking vegetables, makes for an interactive and satisfying meal.
An experience here isn’t complete without exploring the impressive array of six house-made dipping sauces (jaew), each a special recipe designed to perfectly complement your meal.
The warm welcome extends to the service. The staff are attentive, swift, and genuinely friendly, creating a relaxed and familial atmosphere. For those planning events, Sisamoud also offers an off-site catering service (bookings must be made at least two days in advance).
Excellent value is part of the appeal. A generous joum pa set starts at 200,000 kip, while a sindad set begins at 190,000 kip, both easily serving two to three people. For the quality of the ingredients and the satisfying experience, it is a worthwhile indulgence.
Sisamoud Joumjim is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates quality fish, authentic Lao flavours, and a welcoming atmosphere. It’s a place that proves that sometimes, the most memorable meals are the ones that are simple, fresh, and shared with good company.
