Phu Bia Mining teams restore vital Nam Mo Bridge after typhoon damage
Soon after heavy rains caused by Typhoon Wipha on July 25 resulted in severe flooding and damage to the Nam Mo Bridge, located near Phu Bia Mining’s (PBM) Phu Kham operation, PBM teams were mobilised to completely repair the bridge - a vital link connecting nearby communities to markets, workplaces, schools and healthcare facilities.
The teams’ emergency response ensured the safety and mobility of thousands of local residents who rely on the bridge daily.
From July 26 to August 10, PBM’s Mining, Geotechnical, Underground, Mine Development and Community Relations teams worked side-by-side with contractors and local authorities to stabilise the bridge and make it safe for essential traffic.

The repair works included sealing cracks, reinforcing bridge abutments with heavy rock to prevent erosion, applying protective shotcrete to the foundations, and installing new safety barriers. Throughout the project, PBM followed strict safety procedures to protect workers and the local community.
PBM’s Managing Director, Mr David Reid, praised the teams’ commitment.
“This project showcased the dedication, professionalism and teamwork of our PBM employees. They acted quickly and effectively, to not only prevent the damage getting worse, but to restore a critical infrastructure link for the community,” he said.
The PanAust CEO and Managing Director, Mr Daniel Zheng, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to safety.
“The welfare of local communities is always our priority. The Nam Mo Bridge repairs are a great example of how we work with community leaders and local government authorities to respond to urgent needs with speed and expertise,” the CEO said.
“Our efforts to ensure the safety and integrity of the bridge, while minimising impacts on local communities, showcase the capability, agility and collaborative spirit of all our PBM teams.”
This project is a testament to PBM’s FAITH values – being Fast to respond, taking decisive Action, using Innovation and Technology, and staying Human Oriented by protecting people first.
Civil engineers have inspected the bridge and confirmed it is safe to resume crossings, with ongoing monitoring in place.
