Flash floods hit several provinces as Typhoon Kajiki lashes Laos

Several provinces have been affected by flash floods following heavy rain and strong winds brought by Typhoon Kajiki, which swept across Laos on Monday.
In Botaen district, Xayabouly province, a wooden bridge at the border crossing with Dan Sai district in Thailand’s Loei province was temporarily closed after it was flooded.
In Khammuan province, many families in Sivilay village, Xaybuathong district, saw their homes and nearby roads inundated, cutting off travel in low-lying areas, according to the Khammuan News.
Meanwhile, in Bolikhamxay province, roads and bridges in Kor village, Khamkeuth district, were submerged after rivers overflowed their banks.
The Meteorology and Hydrology Department had earlier warned that Typhoon Kajiki would batter Laos, unleashing heavy rain and powerful wind gusts.
Officials cautioned that continuous rainfall over several days could result in flash floods, landslides, and river overflows in many parts of the country.
On August 26, the department issued a fresh alert, advising residents in low-lying areas and those living along the Xedon River to be on the alert for flooding over the next one to two days due to persistent rainfall.
At the Souvannakhily hydrological station in Xanasomboun district, Champasak province, the level of the Xedon River was recorded at 10.32 metres on Tuesday, higher than the flood warning level of 10 metres and approaching the danger level of 11 metres.
Authorities have urged communities in at-risk areas to closely monitor weather updates issued by the Meteorology and Hydrology Department and take precautions to minimise damage and losses.
