Laos opens new fuel import route via Vietnam to boost energy security

The Lao State Fuel Company has opened a new fuel import route through Vietnam’s Nghi Son Port to strengthen energy security and ensure stable fuel supplies to northern Laos.
The route runs from the Nghi Son Special Economic Zone Port in Thanh Hoa province, Vietnam, to Laos via the Nam Kang International Checkpoint in Xiengkhouang province and the Nam Soi International Checkpoint in Huaphan province.
Fuel will be stored at the Nathong depot in Xamneua district, Huaphan province, according to Huaphan Television.
An opening ceremony for the route took place at the Nathong fuel depot, attended by the Governor of Huaphan province, Dr Khampheng Saysompheng, and Deputy Director of the Lao State Fuel Company, Mr Bounyok Boutsavong.
The Lao State Fuel Company said the new route offers a comprehensive solution to enhance energy security, reduce reliance on a single supply line, and provide an alternative import option in line with the government’s goal to stabilise the nationwide supply of fuel.
The route will ensure sufficient fuel for households, businesses and growing industrial activities in northern Laos, which is undergoing rapid development and expanding infrastructure needs.
The first shipment on the new route brought over 2,600 tonnes, or about 3.2 million litres, of Euro 5 standard diesel fuel. Euro 5 is a low-pollutant, high-quality fuel that meets environmental standards and reflects the company’s commitment to cleaner energy.
The initiative also strengthens ties between Laos and Vietnam, particularly between Huaphan and Thanh Hoa provinces, by improving trade and logistics connectivity.
The Lao State Fuel Company said the opening of this new route is an important milestone in ensuring energy stability and promoting regional economic development.
